ニューヨークの注目エリア「ブッシュウィック」を案内する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。今回は自家焙煎のコーヒーはもちろん、充実したフードメニューも楽しめるブッシュウィックのカフェシーンを紹介します。Wi-Fiと電源が完備され長居もできるカフェは、フリーランスの人たちのオフィス代わりにもなっているそうです。

ついに始まってしまいました。隣の部屋の内装工事。朝からドンドン、バンバン、騒々しくてかないません。でも、大丈夫。ここには人の目を気にせずに好きなことをしたり、必要なら仕事もできる「居場所」、いまの私の状況で言えば「避難所」がものすごい勢いで増えているからです。それは「カフェ」！

近所の「バラエティコーヒー」は駅に近く、夜9時まで営業。しかも自家焙煎コーヒーが1ドル50セントというお手頃価格で飲める人気のカフェです。今日も打ち合わせや調べ物をしている人はもちろん、スケッチブックに絵を描いたり、ヘッドホンをのせた頭を揺らしながらキーボードとパソコンを使って作曲をしている人などでほぼ満席。そのため出遅れるとお気に入りの席を確保できないどころか、座れません。

That day has finally come. The room next door to me has started its renovation work, creating a huge racket from early in the morning. But, no problem. Comfortable places where you can do what you like without having to worry about what those around you think and even do your work if necessary—and which can serve as "emergency shelters" for people like me in my current circumstances—have been opening at an incredibly fast pace around here. What are these places? Cafes!

The Variety Coffee in my neighborhood is close to the station, and it's open until 9 at night. That and the fact that you can drink coffee brewed from home-roasted beans for just $1.50 make it very popular. The cafe is almost full again today, with not only people holding meetings or looking things up, but also a person drawing in a sketchbook, and a person wearing headphones and composing music on his PC, tapping into the keyboard while swaying to some tune. If you get there too late you'll find it hard to find your favorite seat, let alone get in.

そんな時は少し歩いて隠れ家的なブラジリアンカフェ、「ピタンガ」へ。搾りたてのジュースやアボカドトーストがおいしくて、特に暑い日は冷たいアサイーボウルについ手が出ます。もちろんコーヒーはブラジル産の豆を使用。シンプルに「ポン・デ・ケイジョ」と呼ばれるブラジルのチーズパンを合わせるのもまたいいのです。

If that happens, take a short walk to Pitanga, a hideaway Brazilian cafe. It serves delicious freshly-squeezed juice and avocado toast, and you must order their chilled acai bowl, especially on a hot day! The coffee is, of course, made from Brazilian beans. Enjoy it in a simple combination with a Brazilian cheese bread called "pao de queijo."

もっとブッシュウィックらしい広々とした空間で時間を過ごしたい時は、「スペース・クラフト・コーヒー」（※閉店しました）に行きます。実はここ地元で人気のバーなのですが、そのオープンの直前まで、空いている「スペース」で淹れたての「クラフト」な「コーヒー」を出してくれる貴重な存在。だから、夕方のバータイムまでというよりも、そこを目指して仕事をしているらしき人の姿もよく見られます。

If you want to spend time in a more spacious place that is particular to Bushwick, go to Space Craft Coffee. This is actually a bar popular among the locals, and is a valuable presence that serves freshly brewed craft coffee in the open "space" during the time up until the bar opens. So you often see people who look like they're doing their work there in order to enjoy that space and coffee, rather than waiting for the bar to open in the evening. 

近郊農家から直送される食材をたっぷり楽しめるベジタリアンカフェ、「ルーティーン」（※閉店しました）には長居したくなる理由が揃っています。8人掛けのコミューナルテーブル（相席テーブル）、裏庭、そして仕事終わりにワインやビールも楽しめるバー。
「そうだな、長い人だと平均4時間はここにいるんじゃないかな？」
マネジャーのセバスチャンさんが言うとおり、その日もまるで試験前日の学生のようにテーブルに本をめいっぱい広げている人、パソコンに向かってずっと話し続けている人などがいて、どうやらその「平均的時間」を順調にこなしている様子です。
でも常々気になっていたことがありました。たったコーヒー1杯で長居するのは、本当のところどうなのか？
「2年前のオープン以来、街の人はとても前向きに僕らのことを受け入れてくれている。だから僕らもコーヒーだけ買っていく人、長居する人、みんな大歓迎なんだよ！」
そう、ここブッシュウィックのカフェの最大の魅力は何時間でも長居ができて、しかも気分よく放っておいてくれること！ コップの水をこまめに替えに来る人は、いないのです。

Routine, a vegetarian cafe where you can savor food made from ingredients shipped directly from a suburban farm, provides plenty of reasons why you would want to spend your hours there: a communal table sitting eight, a backyard, and a bar to enjoy wine or beer after work.
Sebastien Bee, the manager, said, "I would estimate that some of our longer customers are here for an average of about four hours." And indeed, on that day there was a customer who had books strewn across the table like a student preparing for tests the next day, a customer who kept on talking while facing his PC, and others who seemed to be using this "average length of time" quite well.
But one thing kept on bothering me. How does the establishment actually feel about customers who stay so long with just one cup of coffee?
"Ever since we opened two years ago, the people of the neighborhood have been accepting us in a very positive way. That's why we welcome everyone—those who come to buy just coffee and those who stay here a long time."
The largest attraction of Bushwick's cafes are that they let you stay for hours, and also leave you alone. There's no one who hovers around to refill your water glass.

おそらくこうしたカフェの急増には人口が増えたこと、「フリーランス（個人事業主）」と呼ばれる働き方を選んでいるアーティストやクリエイターたちが少なくないことが、その理由として挙げられると思います。フリーランスは毎日オフィスに通う必要はなく、時間も自由になりますが、その代わりすべて自分の責任でやっていかなくてはなりません。ところが、ここ数年で家賃も急騰。5、6人でアパートをシェアすることも特に驚くことではなくなり、そのため格安のコワーキングスペース（共有オフィス環境）などもあるにはあるのですが、「まずは家賃！」となればそれも二の次になりがちです。なにを隠そう、私も自宅で延々とパソコンをにらみつけているひとり。そんなさまざまな事情を抱えた人たちにとって、だからこそカフェはありがたく、オフィス代わりに使っている人も大勢いるのです。

The reasons for the rapid increase of such cafes are probably the growing population and the fact that there are more than a few artists and creators who have opted to work freelance. Although freelancers don't need to commute to an office every day and can use their time more freely, they also have to be responsible for everything. Rents have been soaring over the last several years, and it's not surprising to see five or six people sharing an apartment. To address this situation, there are also inexpensive co-working spaces available, but when paying the house rent comes first, such working spaces tend to rank a little lower on the list of priorities. Let me confess. I'm also one of those who are forever sitting in front of the PC at home. For such people, whatever their circumstances, these cafes are a blessing, and many use them as a substitute for an office.

そんななか、ついにサードウェーブコーヒーの代表格としてニューヨークでも圧倒的な人気を誇る「ブルーボトルコーヒー」もやって来ました。正直「大好きなブッシュウィックの小さなカフェたちは、ブルーボトルに負けたりしないのか？」と心配になったのですが……。
「いやいや、逆に最高だよ！」と、オリジナルフレーバーコーヒーを毎日ていねいに仕上げている本格派ロースタリー、「シティ・オブ・セインツ」の副社長、ジムさんは教えてくれました。
「だってそれは、この街にもっとたくさんの人を連れて来てくれるということ。となれば、他の店をダメにするのではなく、お互いに助け合っていけるでしょう！」

But then Blue Bottle Coffee, overwhelmingly popular in New York as a leading third wave coffee shop, joined the crowd. I was frankly a little worried that my favorite little Bushwick cafes might lose to Blue Bottle.
"No, no. Actually, it's great!" said Jim Osborn, the vice president of City of Saints, an authentic roastery that carefully prepares its original flavored coffee every day.
"That's because it brings more people to this neighborhood. Rather than working against other cafes, we can help each other."

そんなわけで、この街のカフェシーンはまだまだ進化中です。そして変な話ですが私の場合、以前「適度な雑音があるほうが、集中力はアップする」と聞いたので試したところ、ザワザワしたカフェは意外と頭を使う仕事に向いていると知りました。その後しばらくぼーっとピープル・ウォッチングなどをしていると、ここでようやくコーヒーの癒し効果、つまり香りや味が効いてくるのか、緊張もふーっと和らいで、帰宅する頃にはまるで温泉にでも行ったような爽快な気分になっていることが多々あるのです。

ぜひここのカフェに来る機会があれば、好きなことを好きなだけやってみてください。ちなみにパスワード付き無料ハイスピードWi-Fiと電源の完備は、もはや長居ができるカフェの常識に。動画もサクサク、快適ですよ。

That being the case, the cafe scene in this part of town is still evolving. By the way,  I had heard that a certain amount of background noise raises concentration, and so I tried it and found that a bustling cafe is surprisingly good for work that requires you to use your brain. After that, as I sit there for a while just people-watching, the soothing effect of coffee, i.e., its aroma and flavor, finally seems to kick in. I loosen up, and by the time I reach home, I often feel as refreshed as if I had been to a hot springs.

If you have the opportunity to come to a cafe here, please do what you want and as much as you want. Free high-speed WiFi with a password and the availability of a power source is now considered to be normal for a cafe where you can spend some time. Videos also stream well, and it's very pleasant.

ニューヨークの注目エリア「ブッシュウィック」を案内する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。今回はブッシュウィックに拠点を置くサーカス団「ABCirque」と、そのスタジオ＆スクールとなる「THE MUSE」をご紹介。パフォーマーの芸術的な演技を見て楽しむのはもちろん、初心者クラスで実際に体験することもできるそうです。

最近サーカスを見ましたか？ ピエロ、綱渡り、空中ブランコ。私は子どもの頃、場所はもう憶えていないのですが、とにかくとても広いところに突如として現れた大きなサーカステントにビックリした記憶があります。ニューヨークに来てからも一度だけ「ビックアップルサーカス」を見ましたがシアター、音楽、映画、アートなどほかにたくさん楽しいことがあったので、それからは正直、見るどころかすっかり忘れていました。

ところが今年に入って、アメリカの人気サーカス団「リングリングブラザース」が146年の歴史に終止符を打つというニュースが飛び込んできて、思い出したのです。「地上最大のショー」を謳う「リングリング」の一番人気は象の曲芸。しかし動物愛護の観点からそれを中止したところ、なんとも皮肉なことに売り上げが減少、ついに廃業に追い込まれたと聞き、無性にサーカスを見たくなったのです。しかし問題は「いま、どこでサーカスをやっているのか？」ということ。ところが見つけたんです、「ABCirque」を！ しかも、ここブシュウィックで！

Clowns, tightropes, trapezes... Have you gone to the circus lately? I don’t have any memory of where it was, but I remember being astonished as a child to see an enormous circus tent suddenly appearing on a huge plot of land. Since moving to New York I went to see the Big Apple Circus, but with the city offering theater, music, movies, art, and much more in forms of entertainment, it was just that one time. I hadn’t gone to a circus since then, and frankly, it didn’t even cross my mind.

But it came back to me with the news that America’s popular Ringling Brothers Circus was closing for good after 146 years. The most popular performance of the Ringling Brothers, billed as the Greatest Show on Earth, was the elephant show. When I heard that they had stopped this performance for animal protection reasons, and this, quite ironically, led to a drop in sales, eventually forcing them to close down, I had a sudden urge to see a circus. But the question was where do I find one?　I found my answer in ABCirque. And, of all places, it was in Bushwick.

その晩、本当に久しぶりに観たサーカスは、アメリカのスーパーヒーローたちがトランプ大統領を捕まえるという風刺作品。猛獣も猛獣使いもいませんが、愛嬌たっぷりのピエロ役、トランプ大統領とコミカルに空中を舞うスパイダーマンやスーパーマンに笑いが止まりません。

「政治的なショーは初めてだったから、本当に挑戦だったわ」。サーカススタジオ＆スクール「THE MUSE」の創設者、アンジェラさんはダンスもアクロバットもこなすプロのアーティスト。そして、ここに拠点を置くABCirqueのディレクターです。

「小さな頃、馬の背中に乗るバレリーナになりたいと思っていたの。それがサーカスだと知らないまま。だからダンスをやっていたの。実際にサーカスのトレーニングを受けたのはニューヨークに来て、エリザベス・スターブが指導するダンスカンパニーと一緒に練習を始めてから。そこにサーカスができるスペースがあったの」

ある時、身体の小さいアンジェラさんは空中曲芸のパートナーになってほしいと頼まれ、以来サーカスもできるダンサーとしてキャリアを積んだそうです。でも、本当のドラマはここから始まります。

That night, when I went to the circus for the first time in ages, the troupe was performing a satire in which American super heroes capture President Trump. There were no fierce animals or handlers, but I couldn’t stop laughing over the lovable antics of the clowns and Spiderman and Superman comically flying through the air with President Trump.

“This was my first political show, so it was a real challenge,” commented Angela Buccinni Butch, the founder of THE MUSE, a circus studio and school. Angela is a professional artist who is both a dancer and acrobat. She also directs ABCirque, which is based here.

“When I was small, I wanted to become a ballerina riding on the back of a horse. That was without knowing that this is a circus act. That’s why I took up dancing. I began training in the circus after coming to New York, when I began training with a dance company under the direction of Elizabeth Streb. They had a space big enough to do circus acts.”

One day, the petite Angela was asked to be a partner in an aerial performance, and since then she had been building her career as a dancer who can also perform circus acts. But the real drama starts from here.

2007年、「THE MUSE」はブッシュウィックにあるアンジェラさんのアパートの裏庭で始まりました。
「特にニューヨークでは批判の目にさらされずに、手頃な価格で、安心して練習できる場所を見つけるのが本当に大変なの。たとえば、多くのダンススタジオは鏡に囲まれていて緊張の連続。そこに批判の目が重なると、神経質になったダンサーは失敗することを恐れ、挑戦もできず、どんどん不安になっていくの」

アンジェラさんの友人も、まさにそんなダンサーのひとり。そこで裏庭にダンスフロアをつくって練習場所を確保、その後、機会を見つけてショーを行うとなんと100人を超す人々が集まってきたといいます。「ところが竜巻が来て、スタジオが破壊されちゃったの！」。嘘のような本当の話はまだ続きます。裏庭のスタジオ再建に乗り出したアンジェラさんたちを次に襲ったのは、隣で起きた殺人事件。
「あまりにも危険だから、さっさと荷物をまとめてウイリアムズバーグに引っ越したわ。でもそこにはトイレ以外、なにもなくて全部つくったの、生活しながらね」

そんな苦労を重ねた移転先で、今度は再開発の工事が始まってしまいます。頭上で唸るドリルの音。ここも危険だと判断したアンジェラさんは3年前、ブッシュウィックの古い倉庫に帰ってきました。
「THE MUSEはいつもオープンで、なんでも挑戦できて、失敗してもいい場所になっていたの。批判ではなく、支援の目がある特別なコミュニティに。もうみんな家族のようだったから一緒にいたかったし、私はみんなが安心できる“ホーム”をつくりたかっただけなの」
650㎡もある広い新天地は、こうして集まったアーティストの手で改装され、仲間とともに「ABCirque」も結成されたのです。

In 2007, THE MUSE was born in the backyard of Angela’s apartment in Bushwick.
“It’s very difficult to find a place that is reasonably priced and where you can practice with a sense of reassurance, without being exposed to critical eyes, especially in New York. For instance, most dance studios are surrounded by mirrors that make you feel tense at all times. This and the combination of critical eyes will make nervous dancers fear failure, make them unable to take up challenges, and make them feel more and more insecure.”

Angela’s friend was one of those dancers. So, she made a practice space by building a dance floor in her backyard. Later, when the opportunity rose, she said she held a show that was attended by more than 100 people. “But then a tornado came and destroyed the studio!” And there’s more to this unbelievable, but true, story. Just when Angela and her friends began rebuilding the studio in the backyard, a murder was committed next door.
“It was just so dangerous that we packed up our bags and moved to Williamsburg. Our place there had absolutely nothing but a toilet, and so we had to build everything from scratch, while living there.”

But then, after going through so much trouble, a redevelopment project started at this new site. With drilling work making a racket over their heads, Angela, deciding that this place was also too dangerous, returned to an old warehouse in Bushwick three years ago.
“THE MUSE had become a platform that is always open, where you can take up any kind of challenge, and can fail, as well—a special community where the eyes on you are not critical, but supportive. Since we were all like family, we wanted to be together, and I just wanted to make a ‘home’ where we can all have peace of mind.”
This new base for activities, an expansive 650 sqm place, was renovated by the artists who gathered under this concept, and together with them, Angela also established ABCirque.

「いまだに改装中だし、もっとABCirqueの公演を増やしたいし、やりたいこともいっぱいあるけれど大変なことも多すぎて。でも私が泣いていると、みんな『一緒に戦おう』って言ってくれるの。だから毎年のアニバーサリー公演では、もちろんみんなは笑っているけれど、私は感動してやっぱり号泣しているのよ！」と言いながら、大きな声ですべてを笑い飛ばすアンジェラさん。

そんなアンジェラさんたちのABCirqueを見ているうちに、子どもの頃にピエロや空中曲芸にドキドキ、ワクワクした気持ちや、日常から圧倒的にかけ離れた美しい世界にぐいぐい引き込まれていく感覚が戻り、サーカスってこんなに面白かったんだとはっきり思い出していました。

だからぜひ、サーカスを見ませんか？ そして、もしよければ、やってみませんか？
「まずはジャーマンホイールか、アクロバットゲームはどうかしら？ ここには初心者の大人が参加できるクラスもあるの。めちゃくちゃ楽しいし、きっとあなたのマインドも変えてくれるわよ。最初は誰でもサーカスなんて絶対無理！と思うもの。でも、それが出来たら素敵でしょう！」
下手でも、何度転んでも、安心してどんどん失敗してください。ここTHE MUSEなら、みんな全部、笑い飛ばしてくれますから！

“We’re still conducting renovations, I want to hold more ABCirque performances, and there are so many things I want to do, but too many difficulties. But when I’m crying over these things, everyone says, ‘Let’s fight this together.’ That’s why, every year at our anniversary performance, although, of course, everyone is laughing, I become emotional and start crying!” says Angela, loudly laughing it all away.

Watching the performances of ABCirque, the wonder and excitement I felt as a child watching the clowns and the aerial acrobatics, and the sensation of being strongly drawn into a beautiful world so completely different from everyday life, returned to me as a clear memory of how fun circuses are.

So, please go see a circus. And, if you want, you can also give it a try.
“How about first doing the German wheel or acrobat game? We have classes that are open to first-time adults. They’re a lot of fun and will probably change your mindset as well. It’s natural for everyone to believe that circus acts are totally impossible for them to do. But wouldn’t it be wonderful if you can?”
No matter if you’re terrible, or keep on falling. Feel assured about failing over and over again. Here at THE MUSE, everyone will laugh it off for you!

ニューヨークの注目エリア「ブッシュウィック」を案内する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。今回は100％植物由来の“ビーガン石けん”をご紹介。環境に気を配り、使い心地も優しい石けんは、ブッシュウィック土産にもぴったりのスグレモノ。メンズラインも充実しているそうです。

それは、バタバタと夫婦で旅行に出ることになり、慌てて近所で調達したトラベルサイズのシャンプーでした。正直「ヘアケア」なるものに何のこだわりももっていなかったうちの主人。が、生まれて初めて「オーガニック・ホホバオイル入りシャンプー」を使ったからでしょうか、急に「俺の脂っていうか、汚れ？ そういうの全部、落ちた気がする」と言い出したのです。どうやらいままで使っていたモノに比べて驚くほど洗い心地がスッキリしていて、こうしてお気に入りを見つけたからには今後一切、ほかのモノは使いたくない！と言いたかったらしいのです。

It all started with a travel size shampoo hurriedly purchased at a nearby shop when my husband and I suddenly decided to go on a trip. Honestly, my husband has never given a second thought to “hair care,” but it must have been after trying organic jojoba oil shampoo for the first time in his life, he suddenly started saying, “It seems like all my grease—grime?—has been washed away.” Apparently he wanted to say that the product cleansed his hair amazingly well compared to what he had used before and that with this discovery, he never wants to use anything else.

ビーガン、つまり100％植物由来の石けんやフェイス、ヘアケアグッズなどを手作りしている「THE FANCIFUL FOX」の店内はいつもとてもいい香りがします。

「そう、そう、女性より男の人のほうが断然好みにうるさいわよね！」オーナーのアマンダ・フォックスさんに、我が家の小さいけれどとても衝撃的だった出来事を話すと、こういってケラケラ笑ってくれました。

「ここのメンズラインは20人ほどから協力を得て作ったんだけど、アフターシェイブローションの香りを決める時など『鼻の下からこんな変な臭いがするのは耐えられない』という厳しい声が結構上がったの！ だから何度もやり直して、数ヶ月かけて完成させたのよ」

Inside The Fanciful Fox, a shop selling handmade vegan soap, face and hair care, and other products that are 100 percent plant derived, it always smells nice.

“Yes, that’s right. Men are much more particular than women!” chuckled the owner, Amanda Fox, when I spoke about this small, but startling, incident in my household.

“Our men’s line was created with the cooperation of some 20 men. We received quite a few harsh opinions such as when we were deciding on the fragrance for the aftershave lotion like, ‘I can’t stand this awful smell coming from under my nose’! So we did it over and over again, and it took several months to complete the line.”

ペンシルバニアの自宅でできる雨の日の遊びだった蝋燭づくり。
そこから始まったフォックス家の手作り石けんは家族や友人に使ってもらううちに評判になり、2008年から本格的にビジネスを始めたそうです。そして、ここブッシュウィックにお店を構えたのは昨年９月のこと。私としてはやっとこんな丁寧な手仕事をするお店が近所にできたことが嬉しくて、その後もクリスマス、誕生日、ベイビーシャワーと機会がある毎に「THE FANCIFUL FOX」でギフトを買いました。そうこうしているうち知ったのは「ここでは一切パーム油を使わない」ということ。
「インドネシアは特に酷いの」

Candle making was a pastime on rainy days at home in Pennsylvania. This was the start of the Fox family’s homemade soap. First used by the family and friends, its reputation spread and full-fledged business operations were launched in 2008. The store was opened here in Bushwick last September. I was just so happy to have a shop that puts so much care in making its products by hand that since that first purchase I have been buying gifts at The Fanciful Fox every time the opportunity arises, such as Christmas, birthdays, and baby showers. During those visits, I learned that “absolutely no palm oil is used here.”

“The situation is particularly bad in Indonesia.”

アマンダさんのお母さんでもうひとりのオーナー、キャシーさんが教えてくれたのは世界最大のパーム油の生産地のことでした。アブラヤシの実から採れるパーム油は価格が安いため食品や化粧品などに多用されています。またバイオ燃料への転用も期待されていることからインドネシアは国をあげてその増産を目指していると言うのです。問題はこうして増え続ける大規模農園が熱帯雨林を破壊し、人々の生活や生態系を脅かしていること。

「パーム油自体は決して悪いモノではないの。でも大量に消費して、環境に負荷をかけるなら私たちはそれを避けたい。一度伐採した森林はすぐには戻ってこないでしょう」

Amanda’s mother, Kathy, who is the other owner, was speaking about the world’s largest producer of palm oil. Palm oil, derived from the fruit of oil palms, is used in large quantities in food and cosmetics due to its low price. As high anticipations are also placed on its alternative use as biofuel, it is said that Indonesia is making it a national goal to increase production. The problem is that the increasing number of large plantations is destroying the tropical rainforest, threatening people’s livelihoods and ecosystems.

“Palm oil itself is not bad. But we wish to avoid using it since consuming it in large amounts places a burden on the environment. Forests that have been cut down don’t come back right away, do they.”

その代わりに使うのがココナッツ、アボガド、ひまわりなどの油。マイルドなアボガドは洗顔に向きで、ココナッツやひまわりには色をつけやすいので見た目に楽しい石けんを何通りも作れるといいます。するとアマンダさん、「知ってる？　石けんってワインのようなの。新鮮な香りを楽しみたいなら新しいもの、長く使いたいなら水分が抜け切った古いものがいいの。腐ったりしないのよ」。

石けんのレシピ開発に14年かけたというキャシーさんも、「本当に石けん作りって料理と一緒で、最初は誰かのマネ。でもやっているうち自分の味つけができるようになって」と目を細めます。いまではその数50以上。おふたりはすべての商品をお店の地下で愛情込めて作っています。‥‥そうか、ここはフォックス家のキッチンだったんだ！ ピーナッツバターやパンプキンパイなどの香りがついたリップバームは本当に美味しそうで困ります。

In place of palm oil, The Fanciful Fox uses oils from coconut, avocado, and sunflower, among others. The mild avocado oil is for facial cleansing, and since coconut and sunflower oils are easy to color, they’re also used in making soap that is fun to look at. Amanda then said, “Did you know? Soap is like wine. If you want to enjoy a fresh scent, use one that’s new, and if you want to use it a long time, an old soap that has lost its moisture is a good selection. It doesn’t go bad.”

Kathy, who has spent 14 years developing recipes for soap, also said with a smile, “Making soap is the same as cooking. You start by copying what other people have done. But over time, you become able to create your own flavors.”

They now have over 50 “recipes.” The two of them make all the products in the store’s basement, putting a lot of love into their creations. So this is the Fox family’s kitchen! Oh no, the peanut butter and pumpkin pie scented lip balms look so delicious…

とあるブログを見つけました。ガンに２度も打ち勝った女性が書いた「THE FANCIFUL FOX」のレビューには主人のつぶやきに続いてハッとさせられました。「私たちは口に入れるものには気を使うけど、肌はどう？ 皮膚ってとても大きな臓器なのに」。パーム油もワインのような石けんの話も、すべて些細でもとても大切な出来事でした。お陰でいままでなかなか解決できなかった問題の答えも見つかりました。「もしブッシュウィックでおみやげを探すなら何でしょうね？」と聞かれたら自信を持ってこう言います。「『THE FANCIFUL FOX』が絶対におすすめ」。しかもアマンダさん、「何か新しく作ってほしいものがあったら遠慮なく言ってね！」と言うのです。どうやらシェフのレシピ作りはまだまだ続くようで嬉しい限りです。

I found a blog the other day. What the writer, who is a two-time cancer survivor, wrote in her review of The Fanciful Fox was just about as striking as what my husband had said. She stated that we are particular about what we put in our bodies, but what about what we put on our skin? Skin is a very large organ. 

The stories about palm oil and soap resembling wine were all very important episodes for me in that they helped me find an answer to a problem that I was having difficulty solving. “If I was looking for a gift in Bushwick, what should I get?” I can now answer this question with confidence, “I definitely recommend The Fanciful Fox.” To top this off, Amanda even says, “If you want to have us make something new, feel free to ask.” It's a tremendous pleasure to note that these chefs will probably be churning out new recipes for quite a while to come.

ニューヨークの注目エリア「ブッシュウィック」を案内する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。今回は「アート」に敏感なエリアだから出合える、ローカルな魅力をもったふたつのギャラリーを紹介します。

２つまたは複数の異なる「事」や「物」、または「個性」を、限られた、またはそれ自体に強烈な特徴がある場所に共存させようとするとき、それはとても楽しいけれどかなり難しい作業になる場合があります。たとえば八畳の広さの和室にロココ調のベッドを置きたいと思っても、そうやすやすと快適な寝室など出来上がるものではありません。

それは昨年の初夏、友人による二人展があるというのでギャラリー「Hometown」に行ったときのことでした。友人は主に素材として鉄を使う彫刻家です。もうひとりはレーザーカットした木片を石膏で貼り合わせた幾何学的な壁面レリーフを出展していました。ちなみに私はアートを見るのは大好きですがまったくの素人。でも、そんな普通の人間としてよく思うことがあります。「二人展ほどつまらないものはない」と。なぜなら数で圧倒することもできるグループ展と違って二人展はその関係性が濃密なので、自分の主張だけを押し通していたり、どちらか一方が妙に目立っていたりすると、そういう安っぽさが意外と簡単にこちらにもばれてしまうからです。

When you try to have two or more different “events” and “things,” or “personalities” coexist in a space that is limited or is in itself extremely characteristic, it’s sure to be very enjoyable, but the work can also be quite difficult at times. For instance, although you may want to place a rococo style bed in a small Japanese tatami room, it’s not that simple a matter to create a pleasant place to sleep.

This is what happened last summer when I visited Hometown, a gallery where a friend was holding a two-artist collaboration. My friend is a sculptor who works mainly in steel. The other artist exhibited geometric reliefs featuring laser-cut pieces of wood on plaster. By the way, although I love art, I confess to being a total amateur. As a “regular person” I have long thought, “there’s nothing as dull as a two-artist collaboration.” That’s because compared to a group exhibition that can overwhelm with the sheer number of works on display, in a two-artist collaboration, since a very deep relationship exists, when one artist tends to be totally self-assertive or stands out uncommonly, that kind of pettiness is quite obvious to an observer.

すでに大勢の人が集まっていて、蒸し風呂状態のオープニングナイト。でも、決して広いとはいえないスペースでその晩に見たものは、素材も形も大きさもまったく違う作品が、感情を抑え、声をひそめて、お互いをそっと抱きしめるような姿でした。周りの騒がしさとは裏腹に、そこにあったのは凜とした静寂。そしてこの真摯な調和の中でそれぞれが思う存分に輝き放っていたのですから、ドキッとしないわけがありません。

When I arrived at the gallery on opening night, the room was already packed and steamy with people. But what I saw that night in what definitely could not be called a large space, were works differing completely in the materials they used, their form, and their size, but were controlled, low-toned, and embraced each other lightly. In contrast to the noise of the crowd, there was a dignified silence there. And in that solemn harmony the full brilliance of each was clearly evident. I couldn’t help but be astonished.

「ふたりはとても違っていた。でもいくつかのテーマで重なり合っていたんだ。構造的な強さ、でもそのデザインから伝わるはかなさ、もろさ。だから二人展のプロセスとして、まずお互いの作品をどう思うかというやりとりを時間をかけて行った。その後スタジオも訪問しあって、最後には３人で３日かけて設営したんだ」

“The two were very different. But they overlapped on some themes. A structural strength, but an evanescence and fragility conveyed from the design. That’s why the process of this two-artist collaboration began with them taking the time to discuss how they felt about each other’s works. After that they visited each other’s studios. In the end, it took the three of us three days to set up the exhibition.”

久しぶりに気持ちを揺さぶられた二人展を見たせいで、これを後ろで支えていたのは一体どんな人だろう？ と思い続けていました。そして、ようやく会うことが叶ったオーナーのアダムさんは、ゆったり、言葉を選ぶようにしてこう教えてくれたのです。しかも、ここを始める前は「Artsy（アーツィ）」という世界中のギャラリーや美術館などのコレクションを誰でも手軽にネットで検索、閲覧、購入できるリソースサービスの弁護士をしていたというのですから驚きです。

It’s been quite a while since a two-artist collaboration shook me in such a way. This led me to wonder what kind of person was behind the event, supporting it. And, when I finally had the chance to meet the gallery’s owner, Adam Yokell, that was what he told me while slowly and carefully selecting his words. I was surprised to learn that before starting this gallery, he was a lawyer at Artsy, an art resource service that allows people to search, view, and purchase art from galleries and museum collections around the world over the Internet.

「大学と修士課程では美術史を学んだんだ。それから弁護士になろうと決めたのは、そうだな、もっと自分を成長させたかったからかな。僕が入った2011年はArtsyの立ち上げの頃で仕事としてはとても面白かった。でも僕本来の情熱や興味はいつも法よりも前にアートにあったんだ」

だからここで直接アーティストのサポートをしようと決めたというアダムさん。時間をかけて帰ってきた「Hometown」という人生で２つ目のキャリアは、ちょうど１年前に始まったばかりです。

“I studied art history in college and then in a Master's program. Then I decided to become a lawyer—maybe because I wanted to grow more. I joined Artsy in 2011, just around the time of its launch, and the work there was fascinating. But my true passion and interest was always art before law.

That’s why he decided to directly support artists here. His second career in life began just one year ago with this return to his “Hometown.”

もうふたり、やっと会うことができたギャラリーディレクターがいます。かなり前から運河の脇にある真四角の不思議な建物が気になって仕方なかったのです。一体ここで、誰が何をしているのか？
「実は私も窓からずっとこの建物を見ていたのよ！」
THE CHIMNEYのディレクターのひとり、クララさんのご主人はガラスの彫刻家でその建物の向かいのビルにスタジオをもっています。そして、クララさんがその窓から見続けた場所で初めて展覧会をしたのは２年前の６月のことだったそうです。

There are another two gallery directors that I was finally able to meet. I had been wondering from quite a while back about a strange looking cube-shaped building along the canal. Who is doing what there?“Actually, I was always looking at this building from my window, too.”
Clara Darrason, one of the director of THE CHIMNEY, is married to a glass sculptor who has a studio in a building facing THE CHIMNEY.And two years ago in June, she held The Chimney's first exhibition with artist Andrew Erdos at this place that she had been watching from the window.  

「１回きりの展覧会のつもりでアンドリュー・エルデスという作家の作品を展示したらとても評判が良くて、ギャラリーとして使っていいという話になったの」
昨年参加したジェニファーさんは、クララさんと一緒にアートフェアやオープンスタジオなどを通じてたくさんのアーティストに出会い、会話を続けています。

“When we exhibited Erdos’  works here as a one-time only event, it was very well received, and I was told that the space could be used as a gallery” Jennifer Houdrouge, who joined last year, meets many artists with Clara through art fairs and open studios, and keeps in touch with them.

「だって、こんなことニューヨークではめったに起きないでしょ、一辺が７mもある立方体を見つけるなんて！」
ジェニファーさんによるとここは半世紀前に造られた発電所の跡。中にはいるとその桁外れのスケールに思わず息を呑んでしまいます。印象的な、時の経過を知らせる天井の太いビームと今にも崩れそうなレンガの壁。でもこんな絶対的な場所で作品展をするとなると、アーティストにとってはかなり悩ましいことになるのでは？ とふと思ってしまいました。

“That’s because this is something that rarely occurs in New York—finding a cube that’s seven meters long on each side.”
According to Jennifer, this used to be a power station built half a century ago. When you go inside, the incredible size of the building is awe-inspiring, with impressive thick ceiling beams that speak of years gone by, and brick walls that look like they’re going to collapse any minute now. But wouldn’t holding an exhibition in location that is so perfect be stressful for the artist? 

「そう、確かにここはアーティストに対しては挑戦的かもしれないわね。でもそういう制約がクリエーションの機動力になっているのも事実。だからこれまで展示したほとんどの作品はTHE CHIMNEYのために特別につくられたものなの」
「挑戦の賜物」がまさに目の前にありました。その日行われていた二人展では床、壁、天井を３つの高さの層に見立てながら意識的に作品のサイズを変え、その配置にも万全の配慮がなされています。そのため、見る側は視線を下から上、上から下と勝手気ままに、どこに動かしても、その世界観をたっぷり楽しめることになるのです。するとクララさんが「あれ、見た？」と外に連れ出してくれました。少し距離をとり、改めてこの建物を見上げると、なんと、年季が入った煙突がひょっこりと顔を出していたのです。
「だから私たちのプレイグランドはTHE CHIMNEYっていうの」

“It’s true that this may be a challenging place for artists. But it’s also true that such restrictions are what propel creation. That’s why most works exhibited here were specially created for THE CHIMNEY.”
The “fruit of this challenge” was right in front of my eyes. In the two-artist collaboration on the day I visited the gallery, the sizes of the works were deliberately changed while likening the floor, walls, and ceiling to three layers of height, and full consideration was also given to where the works were positioned. Because of this, visitors can thoroughly enjoy the exhibit’s outlook on the world by gazing around in any direction they please—such as from bottom to top, or top to bottom. Clara then took me outside while asking me, “Have you seen this?” Standing a little away from the building and looking up at it, what should I see but an old smokestack showing its face! “That’s why our playground is called THE CHIMNEY.”

春。ニューヨークにとってそれはアートフェアの季節でもあり、世界中からディーラー、コレクター、キュレーター、そしてアーティストなどがやって来ます。もちろんブッシュウィック周辺のギャラリーも盛り上がるわけですが、そういうところにはあまり行かない、という方には「ギャラリーは『アーティスト』を世界に最初に紹介する場所。だから遠慮しないで出かけてください。それだけで支援になるんです」というジェニファーさんの伝言を最後にお届けします。そして、もし最近流行りの、やたら頭でっかちなアートにはもうちょっと疲れた、という方がいたらこれはブッシュウィックの、根っからの素人とはいえアートが好きな住民からの伝言ですが、純粋なそのパワーを感じるためにもアダムさん、クララさん、ジェニファーさんなどこの街を創っている人たちのところにもぜひ遊びに行ってほしいと思っています。

Spring is the season for art fairs in New York, with dealers, collectors, curators and artists gathering from around the world. Of course the galleries around Bushwick also liven up. For those of you who don’t go to such places very much, let me convey Jennifer’s message: “Galleries are where the “artist” is first introduced to the world. So please feel free to come. That alone is support.”
And if you’re getting just a wee bit tired of the currently popular style of art that tends to be a little too top-heavy, this is a message to you from a Bushwick resident who loves art but is a true amateur: If you want to feel the pure power of art, please visit Adam, Clara, Jennifer, and others who are building this neighborhood.

ニューヨークの注目エリア「ブッシュウィック」を案内する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。今回は映画好きの心をくすぐり、一度訪ればクセになる、ブッシュウィックならではの人気スポットをご紹介。こんな場所が家の近所にあったなら！　毎晩通ってしまいそうですね。

毎年、新年を迎える頃になると無性に映画が観たくなるのは、子どものころ、映画好きの父に連れられて封切られたばかりのお正月映画をよく観に行っていたからだと思います。あの頃の「映画」はどの家族にとっても一大娯楽。映画館に向かう道のりもワクワクと楽しかったのを憶えています。が、レンタルやネット購入が主流になるにつれ、その回数は激減。もちろん劇場の大きなスクリーンは捨てがたいのですが、家でビールでも飲みながら観る方が断然便利で安上がりになりました。
ところが、このお正月、事態が急変したのです！

Every year, around the New Year season, I start longing to see a movie. That’s probably because as a child, my father, an ardent movie fan, often took me to see newly released films in the holiday season. Back then it was a big event for families to go see movies. I recall how excited I felt on my way to the cinema. But the number of times we go to movies has dropped significantly with the mainstreaming of rental videos and online viewing. Although watching films on large theater screens is still a great experience, it has become more convenient and economical to watch movies at home while having a beer. But that changed dramatically this New Year.

まず魅力的だったのが、この懐かしい80年代映画のラインナップ！

大晦日：昨年、その突然の死で世界中を涙させたスーパースター、プリンスの初主演映画「パープル・レイン」　元旦：「スター・ウォーズ」の「レイラ姫」で知られ、暮れに亡くなったキャリー・フィッシャーさんが出演していた大ヒットラブコメディ「恋人たちの予感」　３日：今年30数年ぶりに続編が公開されるSFの名作「ブレードランナー」

行く年を惜しみ、来る年を新しい気持ちで迎えるにはタイムリーな内容でした。しかも入場料はいまどきあり得ないたったの３ドル！ さらには上映中、あの高くてまずいだけのホットドッグではなく、つくりたての料理が食べられるというのです。「そういうことなら、今年のお正月映画はこれ！」と決め込んで、お屠蘇にもそろそろ飽きた１月３日、「バー＆シアター＆キッチン SYNDICATED」に向かいました。

What I first found attractive about this establishment was its lineup of nostalgic films from the 80s.

New Year’s Eve: Purple Rain, starring superstar Prince, mourned throughout the world when he passed away suddenly last year. New Year’s Day: Big hit romantic comedy, When Harry Met Sally…, which also featured Carrie Fisher, famed for her portrayal of Princess Leia in Star Wars, who passed away at the end of the year.January 3 : The SF classic, Blade Runner, which will be having a sequel released this year for the first time in over 30 years.

The program was perfect for the season when you reflect on the past year and look forward to the next. The admission fee was also incredible at only 3 dollars! On top of that, during the movie, you can eat freshly prepared food, not those hotdogs that are just expensive and awful. So, after deciding that this is where I’m going to see my holiday movie, on January 3, when I was becoming a little tired of toasting in the New Year, I visited Syndicated.

でも、一見しただけでは古い倉庫を改装したごく普通のバーにしか見えないかもしれません。なぜなら毎日古い映画を上映しているシアターは、お店の奥にあるキッチンの、さらにその裏側に隠されているからです。
「確かに外で映画を観る理由は少なくなるばかりだよね。でも、本当はみんな、もっと、もっと楽しみたいんだ」
オーナーのティムさんは大学で映画を学び、ここをオープンするまではテレビや映画の撮影場所を管理するロケーションマネージャーとして働いていたそうです。
「だから、その『もっと！もっと！』に応えたいと思った。僕は仕事でたくさんのレストランやバーを見てきたし、それにこのブッシュウィックの倉庫を見つけたとき、本当にとてもいい感じがしたんだ」　

At first, Syndicated might appear like a regular bar in a refurbished warehouse. That’s because the theater showing old films every day is located behind the kitchen at the back of the establishment.

“It’s true that there are fewer reasons for watching movies outside. But actually people want to enjoy movies even more,” says Tim Chung, the owner, who studied films in college and worked as a television and film location manager before opening the place. “So I wanted to answer this demand for ‘more.’ I’ve seen a lot of restaurants and bars in my line of work, and when I found this warehouse in Bushwick, it felt really right.”

プロに見初められたロケーションにつくられたシアターには、すでに一杯始めている人、フライドチキンにかじりついている人などが上映前のひとときを思い思いに過ごしていました。普通の映画館との違いといえば、目の前にある半円形のテーブルとクリップボートに挟まれたメニューと鉛筆ぐらい。テープルにはもう２つクリップがついていて、ウエイターさんは「上映中にオーダーしたくなったら、メニューに鉛筆で丸をつけてこのクリップに挟んでおいてね。また来るから」と教えてくれました。

そして約２時間後、今年のお正月映画「ブレードランナー」は揚げたてのフレンチフライと生ビールとともに無事終了。しめて20ドル。これなら普通に外でご飯を食べる金額と変わりません。でも明らかに、まるで友達の家で映画を観たときのようなとてもリラックスした気分になっていました。そして気がつけば、「また来たい！」と「もっと！もっと！」な気持ちになっていたのです。

In this theater, created in a location that instantly charmed a location professional, there were people who were enjoying the short time before the start of the film by having a drink or eating fried chicken. Just about the only difference between this place and other movie theaters was the half-moon table with a clipboard holding a menu and pencil. Regarding the two other clips on the table, the waiter said, “If you want to order something during the movie, use the pencil to circle the item on the menu and fasten it with this clip. I’ll come by to take it.”

My New Year movie, “Blade Runner,” along with my meal of crispy French fries and draft beer, ended some two hours later. The bill came to 20 dollars, which is about what it would cost to have dinner out. But I clearly felt very relaxed, just as if I had been watching a movie at a friend’s house. And it left me with the feeling of wanting to come again and enjoy it “more.”

実は、いまニューヨークではこうした料理やカクテルなどを提供する封切の映画館が徐々に増え始めています。料金は新作なので15ドル。それに飲食代となると、お値段的には「館内で食べなくてもいいかな」と思うかもしれません。またクラシック映画はミュージアムや専門シアターなどで8ドル位から観られるのでありがたいのですが、気の抜けたソーダやポップコーンなどの飲食事情は相変わらず。つまりSYNDICATEDだけなのです！　その隙間を埋めるように、たった３ドルで古い映画を観ながら、キッチンから運ばれて来る熱々の料理や注ぎたてのビールを思う存分、楽しめるのは！！

Actually, theaters showing new movies that also serve food and cocktails like this are gradually increasing in New York. Since the movies are new, the admission is 15 dollars. When you add the price of food and drinks, you might feel that it isn’t worth it to eat in the theater. You can also watch classic films at museums and dedicated theaters from about 8 dollars, but the food and drinks served there are the usual flat soda and popcorn.

In other words, Syndicated fills in this gap by being the only place where you can watch old movies from 3 dollars and enjoy hot dishes from the kitchen and a freshly poured glass of beer.

「だって毎日いろんなところで新しいイベントが行われているブッシュウィックは、『楽しむ』に相応しい場所でしょう」
だからもっと楽しまなくちゃ、とでも言いたげだったこのティムさんの「もっと！」への応えが、本当に久しぶりに、その道のりさえもワクワクと楽しかった気持ちを思い出させてくれました。そしていま「SYNDICATEDで映画を観る」というイベントにすっかりはまっています。
普通にバーで飲むなら、「クラシック映画と一緒に」は、まったく悪くない！！

“Since new events are always underway all over Bushwick, isn’t this the perfect place to ‘enjoy’ things?” Tim’s answer to enjoying things “more,” brought back that feeling of excitement I had on my way to the movies, for the first time in years. I am now thoroughly addicted to “watching movies at Syndicated.
”If you’re just drinking at the bar, having a drink with classic movies is just great!
