いつの時代も新しいカルチャーを生み続ける街、ニューヨーク。時代とともに注目エリアは移り変わりますが、いまじわじわと人気を集めているのが、この「ブッシュウィック」エリアです。今回から始まったこの連載では、アーティストが多く移り住み、クリエイティブな空気に包まれるこのエリアを、現地に暮らす林菜穂子さんがナビゲートします。第一回は、このエリアのシンボルである「グラフィティ」を紹介します。

マンハッタンから地下鉄Ｌラインでブルックリン方面へ。イーストリバーを越えて15分もすると、ジェファーソン・ストリート駅に到着します。古い倉庫や小さな工場。そこに寄り添うように建ち並ぶ低層アパート。その前を無邪気に駆けまわる子どもたち。急に空が広くなったような、そしてまだどこか懐かしさが残っているようなこの街ブッシュウィックは、最近こんなふうに言われます。「いまニューヨークで、最高におもしろいアートのメッカ！」

From Manhattan, take the L line to Brooklyn. Some 15 minutes after crossing the East River, you’ll arrive at Jefferson St. Station. Here you’ll find rows of low-rise apartments nestled up against old warehouses and small factories, and little children playing innocently in front of them. The sky looks bigger here in Bushwick, a neighborhood with an atmosphere that hints of days gone by, and which has recently come to be known as the coolest art mecca in New York.

10数年前なら誰もここに近づかなかったでしょう。治安が悪すぎました。そんな街の、廃墟同然のビルを改装して住みだしたのは、マンハッタンや、人気の高いウィリアムズバーグの家賃高騰に追い立てられたアーティスト。でもニューヨークにはいつもこうして新しい街ができあがります。300以上ともいわれるギャラリーがひしめく最新アートの発信地チェルシーには、かつてソーホーから人が流れ、そのソーホーも以前はイーストビレッジから、同じような理由で住人が流れてきました。そしていまブッシュウィックが、その主役になろうとしています。

It’s unlikely that anyone would have come here about a dozen years ago because the streets were so unsafe then. But residents ousted from Manhattan and the popular Williamsburg neighborhood due to soaring rents started fixing up the decrepit buildings in Bushwick and settled right in. But that’s New York—new communities are constantly born in this way. For the same kinds of reasons, people had moved from Soho to Chelsea, the trendy art hub brimming with what’s said to be over 300 galleries; and before that, from the East Village to Soho. And now Bushwick is gearing up to take center stage.

そんな街のシンボルともいうべきグラフィティは駅に降り立った瞬間、目に飛び込んできます。このムーブメントの仕掛け人が、生まれも育ちもブッシュウィックのジョーさんです。かつて街はいまと違って荒れていて、ジョーさん自身も、中学生の頃に父親が犯罪に巻き込まれたことで苦しい時期が長く続いたといいます。

Graffiti, a sort of symbol of this town, catches your eye the moment you leave the station. The man who started this movement is Joseph Ficalora, a native of Bushwick. This used to be a crime-ridden neighborhood, and Joe himself says that he went through a long, dark period after his father became a victim of crime when he was in middle school.

そして、大切な母の死が、この活動を起こす直接のきっかけとなりました。ジョーさんにとって、ブッシュウィックは母との思い出がたくさん詰まった場所。ジョーさんはグーグルでストリート・アーティストを検索し、コンタクトをとり、壁に絵を描いてくれる人を見つけていったのです。それはまるで、この街が荒れていた頃の思い出をきれいで正直なアートで塗りつぶし、それを天国のお母さんに見てもらいたい一心で走り出した子どものような行動。

What spurred Joe to launch this activity was the loss of his mother to illness. For him, this was a neighborhood full of memories of his mother. He Googled street artists, contacted them, and found some who would paint the walls. His zeal to obliterate memories of the crime-ridden neighborhood by covering the walls with some guileless art was like that of a child acting out of the sheer desire to show this to his mother in heaven. “I found my own peace in it.” And so it was that Joe’s feelings gave birth to the symbol of Bushwick.

それから4年。いまでは駅の近くのトラウトマン・ストリートを中心に、それはもう数え切れないほどのグラフィティがあります。週末ともなればたくさんの人でにぎわい、ジョーさんの呼びかけに応えた世界中のアーティストの作品はもちろん、思わずはっと息をのむ大作にも出会えます。

Now, four years later, centering on Troutman Street near the station, Bushwick has countless walls covered with graffiti. On the streets crowded with people on the weekends you can see the works of artists from around the world who responded to Joe’s calls and also find masterpieces that will take your breath away.

もし初めてブシュウイックを訪れるなら、まずはお散歩気分でこの壁画を楽しんでみてください。気軽に立ち寄れるカフェやバー、レストランもあります。そして、大きく深呼吸しながら青い空を見上げてみてください。ジョーさんのお母さんが、笑っているかも知れませんから。

If you’re visiting Bushwick for the first time, take a stroll and enjoy the walls. There are also cafés, bars, and restaurants for you to stop by. And be sure to take a big breath and look up at the blue sky. Joe’s mother might be smiling down at the sight.
