いまニューヨークでいちばん新しいエリアとして注目されているのが、ブルックリンの「ブッシュウィック」です。この街で実際に暮らす林菜穂子さんのナビゲートで、その魅力を紹介する連載シリーズ「ブッシュウィックへようこそ！」。第１回では街の象徴となっているグラフィティを紹介しました。第２回となる今回は、このエリアのもうひとつのシンボルである、とあるビルをご紹介します。

「もしブルックリンの56 Bogartという住所を知らないなら、それはニューヨークのアート・ワールドの中心を逃していることになります」2015年2月、建築専門紙『The Architect's Newspaper』はニューヨークのアート事情を紹介する記事をこんな風に書き出しました。そして、「チェルシーもバワリーも忘れなさい。ブッシュウィックとイースト・ウィリアムズバーグがニューヨークの、もしかしたらアメリカで最もエキサイティングな、展覧会の最先端です」と続けるのですが、この街の住人のひとりとしては、「確かに！」と思わず嬉しくなりました。なぜなら56 Bogart Streetにある、なんの変哲もない、しかもかなり古びた４階建てのビルは、無数のグラフィティと並んで、この街のもうひとつのシンボルだからです。

“If the address 56 Bogart in Brooklyn means nothing to you then you’re missing the center of the art world in New York City…” So begins an article on the New York art scene in The Architect’s Newspaper in February 2015. It goes on to say, “Forget about Chelsea and the Bowery, Bushwick and East Williamsburg are the most exciting exhibition outposts in the city and maybe in the country.” As one resident of this neighborhood, it was a pleasure to note this as words “well said!” That’s because a nondescript, and quite rundown, four-story building located at 56 Bogart Street is, along with the countless graffiti, a symbol of this part of the area.

工場だったこのビルがアーティストのスタジオに改装されたのは2005年のこと。現在、１階と地階に合わせて20近くのギャラリーが入っています。そのひとつ、昨年秋にチェルシーから引っ越してきた非営利ギャラリー、「ソーホー20」のディレクター、レイチェルさんはこう言います。
「ここのいいところは、ギャラリー同士でいろんな話をして、同時にオープニング（レセプション）を開いたり、情報交換ができたりすることです」

Originally a factory, this building was converted in 2005 into artists’ studios. Currently nearly 20 galleries are located on the first and basement floors. One of them is a non-profit gallery, SOHO20, which relocated from Chelsea last fall. Gallery director Rachel Steinberg says: “The good points of this building include opportunities for galleries to communicate with each other more, hold opening receptions together, and exchange information.”

「ソーホー20」は1970年代、ニューヨークのアート界に一石を投じました。まだまだ白人男性中心に盛り上がっていた当時のアートシーンにあって、「じゃあ、私たちはどうすればいいの？」と感じた女性アーティスト20人がソーホーに立ち上げたギャラリーだからです。以来、メンバーを募り、その協力によって、アーティスト自身で運営を続けてきました。多い時は月に数回の展示をするというレイチェルさんは企画、受付、PRなどなんでもこなします。

「というのも、『ソーホー20』は2000年にチェルシーに移転してきたのですが、その頃のチェルシーはまだまだとてもオープンで快適でした。でも周りにラグジュアリーなビルがどんどん建って物価も上がり、それがサインになったんです。私が以前、このビルの別のギャラリーで仕事をしていたこともあって、ブッシュウィックに引っ越すことに決めました」

SOHO20 Gallery created a stir in the New York art world in the 1970s. In an age when the art scene was still pretty much dominated by white males, 20 women artists, feeling the need to provide opportunities for women, founded this gallery in Soho. Since that time, it has expanded its membership and through the cooperation of its member artists, the gallery has continued to be operated by artists themselves. Ms. Steinberg handles everything from planning to registration and public relations for exhibitions that are held as often as several times a month. “When SOHO20 relocated to Chelsea in 2000, Chelsea was still very open and comfortable. But the luxury building construction rush and rising living costs served as a sign for us. Since I used to work in another gallery in this building, we decided to move to Bushwick.”

確かに、アートを株や不動産のように取引するといわれるやり手の画商たちが集まるチェルシーは、土地の値段もすっかり上がっていまや最高級住宅地。しかも、そこはまるでウォール街のように忙しく、“売れ筋商品”の発掘も独自の手法と情報で行うことが多いそうです。実際、日本で活躍しているアーティストのポートフォリオを見てもらいたいと売り込みに行ったことがあるのですが、担当者は時間を割いてくれないばかりか、「飛び込み営業お断り」的な空気も流れていて、ほとんどの場合、会うことさえできません。

Indeed, soaring land prices in Chelsea, home to shrewd art dealers who trade in art much in the same way as stocks or real estate, have now made it an ultra prime residential area. It’s also like Wall Street in its busy atmosphere, with many dealers using their own methods and information sources to discover “hot sellers.” In fact, when I tried meeting with art dealers to show them a Japanese artist’s portfolio, the people in charge not only wouldn’t take any time to see me, but also gave the impression that walk-in sales are not welcome. And so in most cases, you can’t even meet them.

「つまり恩恵があるんです、56 Bogartに入るということは」
実際にこんなことがありました。チェルシーで何度も門前払いをくらい、半分ベソをかきながらたどり着いたのがこのビルのとあるギャラリー。偶然居合わせたオーナーらしき男性に、チェルシーで言い続けたセリフを発してみました。「アーティストのポートフォリオを見ていただきたいのですが……」。すると彼の手が私のほうに伸びたのです。ポートフォリオを渡すとその場でページを繰り、感想を伝え、最後には連絡先をくれました。
「ブッシュウィックのギャラリーの多くはここと同じように、常にオープンにコミュニケーションをとっているので、チェルシーに比べるとアーティストもアクセスしやすいですしね」
確かにレイチェルさんをはじめ、ここに集まるギャラリーの存在がどれほどアーティストを勇気づけているかわかりません。
「だって私もアーティストですから」

“There are benefits of locating to 56 Bogart.”
This is something that actually happened. Disheartened and about to cry after having the door slammed in my face several times in Chelsea, I found myself at a gallery in this building. To the presumable owner who just happened to be there, I uttered the same words I had said over and over again in Chelsea. “Can you take a look at this artist’s portfolio?” He stretched out his hand, and I handed over the portfolio. He flipped through the pages, gave his comments, and finally his contact information.
“Many of the galleries in Bushwick are like those in this building—always open to communication. They are also more accessible to artists compared to Chelsea.”
Indeed, the presence of Ms. Steinberg and the other galleries located here has been of immeasurable encouragement to artists. As she says: “That’s because I’m an artist, too.”

冒頭の『The Architect's Newspaper』の記事はさらにこう続けます。「それは明らかに40年前のソーホーの、土曜日の午後の風景だ。ボガート・ストリート沿いを散歩すると、どこにでもカフェ、バー、レストランそしてアーティストのロフトがあるのだから」
40年前のソーホーがここにある！？　そうか、ソーホー20は、実は“かつてのソーホー”に帰ってきていたんですね。そして、チェルシーを中心に動いているアートシーンに対する「じゃあ、それ以外のアーティストはどうすればいい？」という問いが、いまここを、記事の書き出しの通りの、「ニューヨークのアート・ワールドの中心」にしているんですね。ちなみに70年代のフェミニズムに始まり、40年間ずっとその「中心」を走り続けてきたソーホー20は年に一度、ここで展覧会をしたいアーティストの公募をしています。もちろん女性以外も大歓迎！

「そう、ブッシュウィックは成長が早くて、いまとてもいい瞬間を迎えていると思います。素敵な出会いや機会がたくさんある街ですし」
だから、改めて、大きな声で言いましょう！ ブッシュウィックにようこそ！！

The article in The Architect’s Newspaper went on to note: “It’s SoHo 40 years ago as any Saturday afternoon stroll along Bogart Street will make clear with its cafes, bars, restaurants and working artists lofts on every block.”
This is Soho 40 years ago? Well then, SOHO20 has actually returned to “Soho in the past.” The question of what to do for artists who are not part of the Chelsea-centric art scene has turned this neighborhood into the current “center of the art world in New York City,” just as noted in the beginning of the article.  Incidentally, SOHO20, which began with feminism in the 70s and has played a central role in this movement for 40 years, calls each year for artists who wish to exhibit there. All artists, not just women, are welcome!!
“Yes, Bushwick is growing quickly, and I feel it is entering a very good moment now. It’s also a neighborhood offering many great encounters and opportunities.”
So, may we shout out again, “Welcome to Bushwick!”
